Jewell Music & More (Ages 4-8 years)Now in its 16th year, our two-week Music & More Summer Arts Program offers children a variety of music, dance and art activities in an interactive, creative environment. Children are divided by age into small core groups, each with its own lead teacher who takes the children through daily activities. Designed for singers 13-18 years old, our NEW Summer Vocal Arts Program is ten days of intensive voice and musicianship training. Focusing on Musical Theatre, Opera and Art song, students will receive daily sight singing and musicianship training plus master classes on vocal repertoire, technique, movement, performance practice, stage presence and audition techniques. Students have the opportunity to perform daily in master class settings and informal recitals. All participants will be assigned at least one solo song or aria and will participate in at least one ensemble or scene, culminating with a performance event featuring fully staged and choreographed numbers drawn from assigned repertoire. Instructors: Brad Fugate, Emily Hindrichs _________________________________________________________ Beginning Instrument, Technology & Theory Classes Music for Little Mozarts (Ages 4-6 years)‘Music for Little Mozarts’ is a joyful, two-week piano course designed for children ages 4-6 years old, which includes activities that support their need to move, sing, play, and imagine. Characters Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear model the teaching concepts of each lesson and invite the children to participate through instructional activities. The series was designed to provide a balance between the discipline necessary for playing the instrument and the enjoyment derived from the process of music-making. Instructors: Piano Faculty additional cost. Piano 4-Hands (Ages 9 to adult)Playing 4-hand music is an age-old tradition and there is a wealth of material for late beginner to advanced levels. Students will be matched into pairs based on age and ability level. Some music will be prepared in advance and some music will be read together during the meeting time. There will be a celebratory performance on Thursday, July 15 at 6:00pm to wrap up the session. Instructor: Piano Faculty GarageBand (Ages 6 to adult)This class will use Apple’s ‘GarageBand’ application to teach the 3 R’s: "‘riting, ‘ranging, and recording." Start with the basics and finish with an album of songs in two weeks! No previous recording experience necessary. Students may arrange extra lab time to work independently. Instructor: Scott Pittman Beginning Percussion Classes (Ages 5 to 11 years)This two-week class presents a fun, yet structured, introduction to drumming. Students will play assorted percussion instruments, including snare drum, drum set, hand drums, marimba, mallets, bells and shakers. The class is an excellent foundation for students preparing to start lessons on any instrument. Current students will quickly increase their rhythmic skills. Instructor: Scott Pittman Piano students will learn the basics of rhythm, notation and ear training in a relaxed group setting that incorporates music and movement with basic keyboard skills; Guitar students will learn the fundamentals of chords, scales, strum patterns and finger picking; Percussion students will play assorted percussion instruments, including drum set, hand drums, marimba, mallets, bells and shakers; Theory & Ear Training students will learn the curriculum of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) theory requirements supported by ‘Auralia’ ear training software in our state-of-the-art technology lab. Discounted Stay & Play with Beginning Instrument Class Course Descriptions for Beginning Instrument Classes: Beginning Piano Class (Ages 7-8 years)This class offers a creative alternative to private lessons. Students will learn the basics of rhythm, notation and ear training in a relaxed group setting that incorporates music and movement with basic keyboard skills. By the end of the session students will be able to read and play simple melodies, recognize all notes on the keyboard, and understand the basics of rhythm and notation. This class is a solid introduction for students who are planning to start individual lessons, or wanting to learn the basics of the keyboard. Theory and Ear Training (Ages 8 to adult)Summer is the perfect time to work on the theory skills that compliment private instruction on an instrument or voice. The new Technology Lab allows the flexibility for all ages and levels to work simultaneously in a class setting. The curriculum follows the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) theory requirements supported by 'Auralia' ear training software in the lab. Class size limited to 6. Introduction To Sibelius (Ages 9 years to adult)Learn the basics of the popular notation program 'Sibelius'. Sessions are flexible and can be arranged individually (private lesson rates apply) or in groups (pricing depends on group size and number of meetings). Beginning Guitar Class (Ages 9 years & older)Whether you aspire to be the next great guitar virtuoso or just want to strum a few chords around the campfire, this introductory class will give you a great start! Students will learn the fundamentals of chords, scales, strum patterns and finger picking. Concepts learned in class will be applied to songs and chord progressions. Bring your own guitar or borrow one from BMS for class use. __________________________________________ Jazz in July (All ages)A Two-Week Intensive Ensemble Program John Purcell’s popular ‘Jazz in July’ offers students an opportunity to experience the excitement of group playing in a relaxed, yet challenging, atmosphere. Ensembles meet for two hours, three days per week for two weeks (12 hours total). Novice, intermediate and advanced ensembles are available. Placement is determined by audition. Students receive a CD at the end of each session. Instructor: John Purcell For more information on Jazz In July contact John Purcell at (617) 964-8868 or jazzbms@aol.com Summer Suites (Ages 10 years and older)A Two-Week Chamber Music Session: strings, woodwinds, piano For many young people, the best part of playing an instrument is making music with others in a group. This session is for students interested in playing classical style music, regardless of ensemble experience. Students will hone their listening skills and develop ensemble skills such as following the leader and learning to balance parts. Students will be placed into groups by audition prior to the session (arranged individually) and will prepare music before the first meeting. Ensembles will meet for one hour, three days per week for two weeks (total of 6 hours). There will be a celebratory performance on Thursday, July 16 at 6:00pm to wrap up the session.
