Brookline Music School 2010 Competitions


Annual Strings Department Competition

Competitions allow us the opportunity to prepare a performance to the highest of our abilities and polish skills we need to succeed in sports, interviews, public speaking and future auditions. At Brookline Music School we provide that opportunity in a familiar setting; students receive written comments from the judges and the chance to win $75 for first prize and $50 for second prize.

Competition will be held Sunday March 28, 2010 from 9:00 to 1:00 in the Bakalar Recital Hall at Brookline Music School. For more information and to enter, please fill out an application form, available from your teacher or in the office.

Meet our Judges!

A native of Detroit, Miriam Bolkosky began her cello studies at the age of four  and made her solo debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at fifteen. Ms. Bolkosky has performed extensively with the Boston Pops, National Lyric Opera, Berkshire Opera, New York City Opera National Company, Music of the Baroque, Chicago Lyric Opera, and Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra as well as with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Ravinia Festival Orchestra, and Chicago’s Symphony II. The Washington Post applauded her recent performance as soloist at the John F. Kennedy Center as one filled with a “poignant beauty born of pathos.” An active chamber musician, she has given numerous recitals including performances at Paul Hall, Harris Hall, the Cape May Festival, the Cayman International Chamber Music Festival, Avery Fisher Hall, Weill Recital Hall, and Carnegie Hall. She is a member of the Ann Arbor based Phoenix Ensemble, as well as Boston’s Radius Ensemble. She holds degrees from The University of Michigan and The Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with Jeffrey Solow, Erling Blondal Bengtsson, and Alan Harris.

Ms. Bolkosky has served on the faculties of Northwestern University, the Music Institute of Chicago, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Montclair University, and the Suzuki School of Newton.  She currently freelances and teaches in Boston.

- Katherine Roussopoulos received her first 10 years of violin instruction from Madeleine van Rooyen at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Center in Cape Town, South Africa. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in violin performance, from the University of Cape Town, in 2004, where she received the highest string practical grade for her year, as well as graduating with distinctions in chamber music, orchestration, and violin performance.  She was placed on the Dean’s Merit List for all of her academic years.  In 2005 Katherine completed her Honors degree in violin performance with distinction.  From 2001 – 2005 Katherine was a member of the UCT orchestras, and was concertmaster from 2003 through 2005. As well as receiving a bursary from SAMRO, Katherine has been awarded the Gerry Meyer and Alfred Libochowitz String Prizes, and is currently a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society.

She has studied under Prof. Jack de Wet, Prof. Jurgen Schwietering, Prof. Farida Bacharova, and most recenlty Prof. Bayla Keyes at Boston University where she completed her Masters degree in violin performance, graduating Summa Cum Laude in May 2008. Katherine performs regularly with Atlantic Strings, a Boston based string quartet, Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, and the Indian Hill Symphony Orchestra.  She has performed extensively throughout South Africa, toured Europe with the Hugo Lambrechts Symphony Orchestra, and has performed solo and chamber music recitals in the Seychelles, and the USA. Katherine has been sponsored by Skye International Foundation, the National Arts Council of South Africa, and the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust.

Annual Piano Competition

This competition, open to all Brookline Music School piano students, is intended to provide valuable experience for young musicians and to inspire them to explore the beauty of the piano repertoire. Students 18 years of age and under are invited to compete in three age categories, based on age as of May 2, 2010. Prizes for each category will be awarded:

1st Place - $50; 2nd Place - $25
Additional prizes may also be awarded for special categories as determined by the judges. 
All contestants will receive a certificate of participation.

10 years of age and under
Two or three contrasting pieces of up to 8 minutes total length.  Pieces should represent contrasting style periods of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary. 

11-14 years
Two or three contrasting pieces of up to12 minutes total length.  Pieces should represent contrasting style periods of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary

15-18 years
Two or three contrasting pieces of up to 15 minutes total length.  Pieces should represent contrasting style periods of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary.

Information for all three categories:
* Applicants must have studied with their current teacher a minimum of one year, or the name of previous teachers must be provided.
* Music must be memorized
* Applicants’ choice of material must have their teachers’ approval
* Applicants will be notified by telephone or email of their competition time by April 25th.

First Annual Woodwind Solo Competition
Sunday, May 23, 2010, 1:00-4:00pm
Brookline Music School's Bakalar Recital Hall

This competition is open to all Brookline Music School woodwind students. Students will be able to compete in one of three age group brackets. Age 10 and under, Age 11-14 and Age 15-18 (or senior in high-school). Students, with their teachers, may choose to perform a piece in any style. For example, you may choose to perform a classical solo with or without piano accompaniment, or you may choose to perform a jazz standard. However, if a student chooses to perform a jazz standard they must improvise. The pieces should not exceed 8 minutes in length if possible and must be from start to finish, we will not accept excerpts. Instead of playing one entire piece you may choose to perform two contrasting movements.

 Additional Information for Applicants:
*A BMS piano accompanist will be available for the competition and for one rehearsal during the week prior to competition for an additional $15 fee, or contestants may bring their own accompanists

*Music need not be memorized, but the pieces must have approval of the contestant’s teacher, who is asked to sign the application form where indicated

* Judges’ written comments will be sent to each contestant following the competition.


* Contestants will be notified by telephone of their competition time by April 26, 2010

Prizes:
The winner of each age bracket will receive a cash prize of $75, while the runner-up will receive a cash prize of $50. Both the winner and runner-up of each age bracket will perform on a Brookline Music School recital together on Saturday June 5, at 4:30pm. This means if you agree to be part of the competition you must be available to perform on the recital if chosen.

STRING COMPETITION - Sunday, March 29, 2009

This competition is open to all Brookline Music School string students and is intended to provide valuable experience for young musicians. 

* Students 18 years of age and under are invited to compete in two age categories, based on age as of March 29, 2009.
* Prizes for each category will be awarded:
1st Place - $75; 2nd Place - $50
* Additional prizes may also be awarded for special categories as determined by the judges. 
* All contestants will receive a certificate of participation.

12 years of age and under
One piece (or movement) of contestant’s own choice, not exceeding 4 minutes in length.

18 years of age and under
Two contrasting pieces (or movements) of contestant’s own choice, each not exceeding 4 minutes in length:
* One piece written for performance with piano accompaniment.
* One piece written for unaccompanied solo instrument.

Information for both categories
* A BMS piano accompanist will be available for the competition and for one rehearsal during the week prior to competition for an additional $15 fee, or contestants may bring their own accompanists
* Bowing and fingering are to be decided by the applicant and the applicant’s teacher
* Music need not be memorized, but the pieces must have approval of the contestant’s teacher, who is asked to sign the application form where indicated.
* Judges’ written comments will be sent to each contestant following the competition.
* Contestants will be notified by telephone of their competition time by March 22, 2009
