Honors Program
Ages 10 and up,
all Levels
The Honors Program is an enrichment program designed for
students interested in pursuing a higher level of accomplishment through a
standards based curriculum specific to each instrument. Within a supportive peer
environment, students work with master teachers and participate in group
activities, ensembles and recitals. There is a $50 fee to enroll and merit
scholarships are available. Some activities may require an additional fee.
Admission is by teacher recommendation. Contact: Margaret Denton (ext. 243)
Honors Program Requirements
~ Three performances, one of
which should be a collaborative performance with another student.
~ Formal evaluation in early June based on the Associated Board of Royal Schools
of Music Exam Standards (ABRSM) including technique, repertoire, sight reading
and ear training. Students may substitute entry in a competition for this
requirement.
~ Theory: Students working at levels higher than Grade 5 according to the ABRSM
standards must have completed the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory requirement.
~ Attend a minimum of two Creativity Classes during the course of the School
Year.
Workshops and Masterclasses
The Honors Program features
monthly workshop opportunities in which students explore topics such as
performance practice, history, theory, and improvisation. Some workshops are in
a master class format focusing on performance, while others are presented in an
interactive discussion format. Students who successfully meet their goals in the
Honors Program will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement for the level of
work completed at year-end concerts. Special awards of merit and distinction may
be granted in recognition of significant achievement.
