A Music Festival for Brookline
BROOKstock II: Where the '60's Meet 2013
Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 7:30pm
Pine Manor College
400 Heath St. Chestnut Hill

$10 general; $5 students
Tickets at BMS (617) 277-4593 or at the door

Brookline Music School’s Rock/Jazz ensembles will perform music from the 1960’s, an amazing decade of American popular music, which laid the foundation for all that followed. Original music from Brookline's most promising young bands, singer/songwriters, and composers, such as Big Words, Next Best Western, Fluffington, and Bella Ortiz-Ren will also be featured. BROOKstock II seeks to contrast music from the 1960’s with music being created here and now by today's young musicians. The similarities and differences between the two will certainly shape an exciting and entertaining evening of live music.

The BMS Rock/Jazz ensembles are lead by Brookline Music School’s Ensembles Coordinator and saxophone faculty John Purcell, who has been teaching ensembles at BMS sine 1996. Purcell said he has lead “100’s of ensembles and worked with 100’s and 100’s of students.” The ensembles mainly play popular rock or jazz songs, while incorporating original music from students. Purcell arranges all the songs and explained that he will “choose material or arrange in such a way that plays on the strengths of each individual. The BMS ensembles frequently perform live, including at the BMS Rocks Roggie’s event at Roggie’s Brew & Grille in Brighton, for two full days, twice a year, Beatles Open Sing concerts at Lincoln School, and the annual spring concerts, including three Beatles concerts, Songs in the Key of Wonder, and the first BROOKstock, which have taken place in the spacious Ellsworth Theatre at Pine Manor College for the past few years.

Sgt. Pepper Band performed at 21st Century Fund Gala
November 10, 2007

Arthur Segel, one of the founders of the Brookline High School 21st Century Fund, was this year’s Distinguished Alumnus honoree at the
21st Century Fund Gala.  Segel was honored on November 10, 2007 at the 7th annual event, held at Brookline High School.  The Gala is
the primary fundraiser for this nonprofit organization, which benefits hundreds of students each year. www.bhs21stcenturyfund.org.

Brookline Music School’s Sgt. Pepper Band performed live Beatles tunes as a special tribute to Arthur, a devout fan of the Fab Four.
This was a special honor for the School and for the band’s coordinator, John Purcell, who nurtured the music education of Arthur’s children
for many years. Purcell noted, “Of Arthur’s many accomplishments, sending such great kids out into the world must surely be one of his
proudest. We are thrilled to partner with the 21st Century Fund in his honor.” Students showcased Arthur’s favorite Beatles tunes, including
With a Little Help from my Friends, When I’m Sixty-Four and Imagine.

Brookline Reads!

In April 2006, Brookline Public Library kicked off its annual Brookline Reads program with a musical presentation by Brookline Music School. This year's town-wide reading selection is Lisa See's  Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, a novel about "nu shu," the secret writing developed and used by women in a small county in China for over a thousand years. Faculty pianist Li Fan performed Eight Memories in Watercolor, a solo suite by Grammy and Academy Award-winning Chinese composer Tan Dun, while piano, violin and guitar students of Sara Chen, Shufang Du, and Bob Ward offered a selection of folk songs from Taiwan and China. Sara and Shufang also performed a contemporary Taiwanese duet for violin and piano by Tyzen Hsaio.
